While you may have heard of someone who ate spicy food and then went into labor, there’s no scientific evidence to support that this particular meal choice will actually kickstart the process.

Theoretically, if you stimulate your GI system, you might be able to stimulate your uterus and start labor, since your GI system and uterus are geographically close to one another in your body. But please don’t start pouring ghost pepper hot sauce over everything you eat—that “someone” you heard about was probably already going into labor on their own.

There is, however, evidence to support that eating lots of spicy foods will give you an upset stomach and heartburn, so keep that in mind if you’re feeling desperate to get labor going.
