Dates, either red (jujubes) or medjool, are an evidence-based way to help soften the cervix and get it ready for labor. Exactly how they help to soften the cervix remains unclear, but the current theory is that dates help with oxytocin release, which is involved with cervical dilation and contractions.
Studies have shown that dates may also decrease the chance1 of needing a medical labor induction and increase how quickly your cervix dilates during labor.
There is only one note of caution if you want to eat dates during pregnancy. If you have gestational diabetes or diabetes outside of pregnancy, make sure you pair your dates with a protein source and be mindful of your glucose levels. Try blending it with some Greek or full-fat yogurt, nut butter, frozen banana, and cacao or cocoa powder for a nice chocolate milkshake dupe. You could also make energy balls with nuts, dates, and a blender.
